INSTRUCTOR Reference: Handbook, Vol. II, Chapter 24
Use of title. The College of Arts and Sciences does not make appointments using the title of Instructor, and no new Instructor appointments are currently allowed by the University. However, because the title is still an active one according to the Handbook, some information about it is given here. Qualifications for appointment. Appointment to the rank of Instructor normally requires completion of professional training, in many fields marked by the Ph.D., and the promise of a successful career in teaching and research. Length of term and limits on reappointment. Instructor appointments are for one year (or less) and are limited to a total of five years. Instructor appointments are eligible for tenure; the years spent as an Instructor are counted toward the mandatory tenure review. New appointment documentation. Reappointment procedures. The reappointment decision must be made six months (or for an initial annual appointment, three months) before the appointment expiration date. In the third year of appointment to Instructor, the faculty member should be informed that a promotion or termination decision must be made in the fourth year. In the fourth year of appointment, the department must decide whether to recommend (1) promotion, (2) reappointment for a fifth and terminal year, or (3) nonrenewal at the end of the fourth year. Reappointment documentation. Reappointment recommendations are due in the Dean's Office in mid-November and mid-February. See Reappointment documentation. |
