RESEARCH PROFESSOR Reference: Handbook, Vol. II, Chapter 24
Qualifications for appointment. Appointment to the rank of Research Professor or Research Associate Professor requires qualifications corresponding to those prescribed for that rank, with primary emphasis upon research. Length of term and limits on reappointment. Terms of appointment for Research Professors and Research Associate Professors may be from one to five years, and there are no limitations to the number of reappointments that can be made. Tenure is not acquired in any research appointment. Part-time appointments. Faculty may be appointed to professorial or research professorial ranks on less than full-time basis. The percentage of appointment must be clearly documented at the time of hire. New appointment documentation. Reappointment procedures. The reappointment decision must be made in the last year of appointment, six months (or in the case of an initial annual appointment, three months) before the appointment expiration date. Reappointment is independent of current or future salary availability. See Departmental actions for reappointment. Reappointment documentation. Reappointment recommendations are due in the Dean's Office in mid-November and mid-February. See Reappointment documentation. Promotion to Research Professor. Promotion to the full Professor level is not a function of time in rank nor length of service. Every faculty member below the rank of Professor must be considered each year for possible promotion. See Review committees for promotion/tenure for suggestions in handling these considerations. Research faculty promotions must meet all criteria and procedures that apply to regular faculty promotion, except evaluation of teaching. If promotion is recommended in the last year of a Research Associate Professor's appointment, a separate reappointment recommendation should be submitted in addition to the promotion recommendation. For general information, see Promotion and tenure. For specific departmental actions in making a promotion recommendation, see Departmental actions for promotion and tenure. Promotion documentation. Promotion recommendations are due in the Dean's Office in mid-December. See Promotion documentation.
