Fictionalizing Autobiography: A Writing Studio
ENGL 281 E
Instructor: Shawn Wong, English
The common question asked of writers of fiction is whether or not their writing is autobiographical. Writers normally answer that their work is fiction and should be judged as such so that readers can judge the craft rather than the background social history of the story. Writers do use autobiography as a source for their fiction in the same way actors use events from their own lives to probe the depths of emotion in their characters. Actors might be playing a fictional character, but they are adding complexity to their characters by using emotions that might have come from some real event in their own lives.
