Why Lance and Michael Always Win: The Physiology of Exercise
BIOL 110A
Instructor: Mary Pat Wenderoth, Biology
What makes Lance Armstrong and Michael Phelps such superb athletes? Do energy bars work? What is creatine and how does it work? Should human growth hormone supplements be banned? This class will explore the scientific basis of the upper limits of human performance as well as explain the proposed physiological basis of numerous performance enhancing supplements. We will investigate the benefits of different training regimes, gain a deeper understanding of aerobic performance (VO2 max), and evaluate the research on the use of anabolic steroids. The course will have a strong scientific emphasis.
This course can be used toward completion of the Natural World (NW) requirement.
