Food!
C LIT 211C

Instructor: Jose Alaniz, Comparative Literature/Slavic Languages and Literature

This course examines food in literature, cinema, art, journalism and memoir. Relying on the work of Michael Pollan, Eric Schlosser, Mikhail Bulgakov, Laura Esquivel, Sigmund Freud and others, we will consider food as nourishment; cultural phenomenon; status symbol and propaganda prop, as well as delve into the problems involved in the representation of food in various media. Along the way, we will touch on such related issues as gender/race/class; the art of cooking; energy policy; the environment; vegetarianism; meat production; hunger; disgust; eating disorders and the politics of food. Student activities will include: researching and reporting on food items; keeping short journal accounts on a weekly basis; meeting/interviewing food professionals; and preparing a meal with peers. We might even sample a Seattle restaurant or two!

This course can be used toward completion of the Visual, Literary, and Performing Arts (VLPA) requirement.
