Television Comedies: A Creative and Performance Workshop
DRAMA 259A
Instructor: Shanga Parker, Drama
In this class, we will watch hit half-hour television comedies of the last two decades (such as Friends, Seinfeld, Arrested Development, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 30 Rock, etc.). We will look at the structure and content of each of these shows. Using them as models, we will create the structure and determine the content of our own television-style comedy.
We will use various methods by which to create material, including the Viewpoints Method (created and developed for the making of new performances).
It is, and has been, my goal as an instructor to give students the tools to be generative artists (not merely interpretive artists). If a student knows how to make something his/herself, s/he never has to wait on someone else to give him/her a job. This class will help you toward that goal. Television watching is the only prerequisite!
