Creative Process
GEN ST 160B

Instructor: Jennifer Salk, Dance

Learn essential college and life skills by exploring art! This course offers a challenging, entertaining lens into the creative processes of some of the masters of dance, music, visual art, and theatre. NO PRIOR DANCE EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Whether you are interested in business, science and medicine, literature, psychology, or philosophy this course will be beneficial. While at UW you are going to have to create something on your own and with a group; you will have to do in depth research and you will have to write…a lot; you will have to see something through from its initial brainstorming seeds to fruition. This course will hone your critical thinking and analytical skills, and will involve close reading of texts, while helping you adjust to a constantly changing, increasingly complex world. We will explore these skills while offering an entertaining lens into the creative processes of some of the masters of art, with particular attention to contemporary dance. The class will begin with a movement warm-up. A portion of the class will look at legendary dances and will include private, live performances in the studio that involves interaction with major artists. You will have the opportunity to explore your own creative process through movement, writing, and other creative outlets. Field trips to dance and music concerts, a play, and a museum/gallery will round out the experience.

This course can be used toward completion of the Visual, Literary, and Performing Arts (VLPA) requirement.
