What is Sound?
GEN ST 162C
Instructor: Peter Dahl, Applied Physics Laboratory/Mechanical Engineering
In this course you will be introduced to the physics of sound we experience on a daily basis such as music, the voice, and the environmental sounds that surround us, as well as less familiar sounds, such as medical ultrasound and underwater sound (sonar). The course will involve hands-on experience, ranging from experimentation with outdoor and environmental sound measurements, to experimentation with underwater sound. You will gain an understanding of sound waves, sound frequency, decibels, the speed of sound, and the nature of sound travel in air, through our bodies, and underwater. The course is open to all UW students, though students interested in pursuing fields in engineering, physics, or natural sciences will find this course particularly appropriate.
This course can be used toward completion of the Natural World (NW) requirement.
