UW Planetarium Goes Digital

In partnership with Microsoft, the Department of Astronomy has updated its planetarium with digital technology. The result is an experience—and educational resource—that is truly out of this world.

Students in the Jackson School's Arctic Governance Task Force braved blizzard conditions, ate musk oxen and caribou, hobnobbed with Inuit leaders, and met diplomats from six Arctic nations during a research trip to Ottawa.

An intriguing bequest led two English Department staff members on a road trip to Oregon to learn more about the bequest donor, a former high school English teacher who had made a big impact on his small town.

Science Inspires Art in New Course

A new studio art course that encourages students to find inspiration in science includes visits to the UW's Kirsten Wind Tunnel and other labs across campus, plus guest lectures by both artists and scientists.

The Department of Women Studies is no more! The department's name has been changed to the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, reflecting the unit's broader reach.

The Plant Detective

Studying club mosses, the world's most ancient vascular plants still alive today, UW senior Jeff Benca combines his passion for plants and prehistory. His research may provide clues to climate changes during past mass extinctions.

Stardust Reaches NExT Rendezvous

In February, NASA's Stardust spacecraft had its second rendezvous with a comet, sending back new images long awaited by scientists. UW astronomer Donald Brownlee is a co-investigator for the mission.

Three faculty from the College are recipients of 2011 Sloan Research Fellowships, given by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation "to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise."
