The College of Arts & Sciences and the UW Career Center are pleased to offer all junior and senior students majoring in any of the humanities departments an opportunity to advance their career readiness. The A&S Humanities Career Fellows Program is a multi-quarter program that will begin in January 2016. This program was first successfully piloted with students in the Department of History, and now is being piloted division-wide in the Humanities.
Below is more information. To accommodate student schedules, we are offering two sections: Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings. Upon completing the A&S Humanities Career Fellows program in Winter 2016, students will have choices on how to extend their Fellows-experience into Spring 2016.
Students can benefit from participating in this program, regardless of whether they know exactly what they want to do after UW (in terms of career, life), have no clue about their futures, or haven’t begun thinking about what’s next.
Humanities majors include:
- Asian Languages & Literature
- Classics
- Comparative History of Ideas
- Comparative Literature, Cinema & Media
- English
- French & Italian Studies
- Germanics
- Linguistics
- Near Eastern Languages & Civilization
- Scandinavian Studies
- Slavic Languages & Literatures
- Spanish & Portuguese Studies
Description:
This program will help Humanities students find meaningful work after graduation through strengths identification, career exploration, and the development of effective of job search strategies. The course will begin with a strengths workshop that will help students think about their own unique skills and the vocations that organically suit them. Students will also construct master résumés, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles that will help students tailor their materials to specific job descriptions once they begin a job search in earnest. The goal is for students to gain a deeper understanding of how their respective academic training translates to a myriad of potential professional settings, and for them to learn a number of proactive strategies that will help them navigate the job market upon graduation.
