Henry Art Gallery

The neon sign outside of the Henry Art Gallery reveals different words as they illuminate in a cycle: LOVE. RULES. LOVE. OVER. RULES. This work of art from 2020 is by Hank Willis Thomas, the much-lauded, Brooklyn, N.Y.-based conceptual artist, and is also the title of a new, commanding exhibition at the Henry, featuring more than 90 works spanning 20 years from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his family foundation.

Building upon the curriculum of the new course, “Cinema and Feminism in the Middle East”, the department of Middle Eastern languages and cultures and the Henry art gallery collaborated on film screenings from a renowned Iranian director. The films “[serve] as a window into a culture rich with history that is worth learning about”, according to writers Shireen Aryana and Madhavi Karthik.

Kris Lewis has been named the next John S. Behnke director of the Henry Art Gallery. Kris brings 28 years of experience in museums and in visual arts organizations, most recently as director of development and interim executive director for the Fowler Museum at UCLA. Kris will begin her tenure at the Henry on August 8, 2023, following the retirement of current director Sylvia Wolf.

A memorable one-day event, developed by artist Daniel Alexander Jones, guided visitors to five temporary altars around the UW campus.

As a method of bridging age gaps in the arts space and on campus, the Henry Art Gallery has collaborated with AgePRIDE to provide intimate tours of the contemporary art museum. In their piece, contributing writer Elizabeth Martyrossian discusses the program and its impact on the community. 

“Altar No.3: I Choose To Remember Us Whole,” the latest installation in the Henry Art Gallery, encourages us to indulge each other in our reflections and promote a positive understanding of the world around us. Contributing writer Meghan Haydon speaks with the artists and creators of the project, which aims to promote dialogue, empathy, and community healing.
