The Department of English,one of the largest departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, focuses on literature, rhetoric, culture, theory, criticism, history, pedagogy, and creative writing. The faculty includes three MacArthur Fellows and a National Book Award winner. Its Interdisciplinary Writing Program is a national model for effective writing instruction, and the Creative Writing Program is ranked among the top ten nationally by U.S. News and World Report. Alumni have translated their English degrees into successful careers in business, education, law, medicine, library science advertising, and journalism.

Degrees offered: Bachelor of Arts, English (options in language and Literature, Creative Writing); Master of Arts, English Literature and Language; Master of Arts for Teachers, English Literature and Language, Master of Arts for Teachers (of English to Speakers of Other Languages); Master of Fine Arts, Creative Writing; PhD, English Literature and Language.
