The votes are in and the UW’s new Life Sciences Building (LSB) is officially the “2018 Building of the Year,” as named by Seattle’s Daily Journal of Commerce (DJC). In early February the LSB joined a list of nominees, including the Space Needle and the Amazon Spheres, as finalists for the prestigious annual award.
According to the DJC, only six votes separated the LSB and second place finisher F5 Tower/The Mark in downtown Seattle. The LSB’s sustainability initiatives, including the use of solar glass fins to produce clean energy, garnered special attention. Voters also praised the building’s collaborative spaces for learning and research.
“The new Life Sciences Building creates the opportunity for the University of Washington College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Biology to not only respond to the huge research and undergraduate teaching demands by providing a modern, high-quality, sustainable environment that encourages collaboration and innovation, but also inspire future generations and our community,” said Devin Kleiner, project architect at Perkins+Will.
The LSB is 187,000 square feet and includes an 18,000 square foot greenhouse to house the UW’s extensive plant collection. It’s located along the Burke-Gilman Trail on the south end of the UW Seattle campus.
