Honors and Awards

UW Professor Emeritus Estella Leopold has been awarded the International Cosmos Prize, which honors those who further the "harmonious coexistence between nature and mankind." The prize carries a cash award of 40 million yen—nearly $500,000—and goes to just one individual or team each year.

Women gained voting rights in Washington State 100 years ago. To commemorate this momentous event, the Women’s Center will host a November 6 gala honoring 100 women who were the first to break the barriers in various fields.

“Yes, there is life after retirement, though sometimes I think it will be the death of me,” jokes Dan Waugh, who continues to travel to far-flung locations for his research. Waugh is one of four emeritus faculty, all from the College of Arts and Sciences, selected as Mellon Emeritus Fellows. 

With support from a major Challenge Grant, the UW Simpson Center for the Humanities is planning a Digital Humanities Commons to create and evaluate the next generation of digital humanities scholarship. 

The College has selected five top graduating seniors as Dean's Medalists for 2008. 

"[The students] make me laugh every day. And they will try anything," says Monte Cristo Elementary School teacher Andrea Peterson ('96), recently named Washington Teacher of the Year. 

Tim Egan ('81) has received the National Book Award for nonfiction for a book about the Great American dust bowl. 

Geography major Loyce Mbewa founded the Rabour Village Project to support ongoing sustainable community health projects in her Kenyan village. 

Eliana Hechter, who enrolled at the UW at age 14, is now graduating--with a Rhodes Scholarship. 

A UW team participating in the National Ethics Bowl, a competition of ethical analysis, finished in first place. 

Four graduating seniors--one from each of the College's four divisions--have been named A&S Dean's Medalists for their outstanding accomplishments. 

Although Jim Clowes' life was cut short, his work and his spirit will live on through two new funds created in his honor.
