Awards & Honors in Arts & Sciences

UW College of Arts & Sciences faculty have been recognized nationally and globally for their achievements in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. They include MacArthur Fellows, Nobel Prize winners, recipients of the National Book Award, and leadership roles in dozens of research and scholarship organizations. More than 125 Arts & Sciences faculty have been recognized with the UW Distinguished Achievement Award since its inception in 1970.

David Hertzog, UW professor of physics, and Peter Kammel, UW research professor emeritus, are part of an international team that won the 2026 Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics, which celebrates decades of work to better understand the muon — a subatomic particle with anomalous properties.
