Dear Students,

Welcome to the new academic year! Whether you are new to the UW or returning to continue your studies, I hope you had an enjoyable summer and found time for relaxation and adventure.

As the academic heart of the University, the College of Arts and Sciences offers nearly unlimited opportunities for exploration and development in the classroom and beyond.  You can attend lectures with visiting scholars, enjoy the reopening of the Burke Museum, experience the arts through free or low-cost events for students, and so much more.

If you haven’t yet declared a major, I invite you to visit our Discover Arts & Sciences pages to learn more about our four divisions — artshumanitiessocial sciences and natural sciences — and consider which programs spark your interest. Students in the College often pursue more than one major or add a minor.

Our monthly newsletter, Perspectives, provides a snapshot of exciting things happening in the College of Arts and Sciences, including important faculty research, interesting courses, memorable student experiences, and more. We’ve also included a few upcoming events you might consider checking out.

Enjoy this issue of Perspectives and have a wonderful fall quarter.

Sincerely,

Bob Stacey
Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
