Department of American Ethnic Studies

The trees are a gift from the Japan Commerce Association of Washington to the UW Department of American Ethnic Studies to celebrate the long history of Japanese-American relations at the university and in Seattle.

Stephen Sumida, professor of American ethnic studies at UW, received the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Asian American Studies.

Black Cultural Studies students combined traditional coursework with community projects through a winter quarter collaboration with the Northwest African American Museum.

Award-winning author Sherman Alexie joins the Department of American Ethnic Studies as a senior artist-in-residence.
