Sapna Cheryan, professor of psychology at the UW, and her colleagues want U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to consider not telling grads to, "Follow your passions," in his commencement address on Saturday. Instead, in this interview Cheryan shares alternative advice for graduating students.

University of Washington undergraduate Zoe Hana Mikuta made waves in the young adult (YA) book community last summer when she released her Sapphic sci-fi epic “Gearbreakers.” The novel — already optioned for a movie when it was published — features star-crossed lovers fighting on opposite sides of a robot war and was a staple on LGBTQ+ reading recommendation lists last year.

Fresh off the June 28 release of the book’s sequel, “Godslayers,” Mikuta, 22, spoke with The Seattle Times about the mecha, Sapphic duology.

Anyone keeping an eye on the U.S. Congress senses that free community college across the country looks increasingly unlikely. However, one emerging model may provide a road map for other institutions. It’s the Path to UW — a transfer partnership between the Seattle Colleges Seattle Promise program and the University of Washington Seattle campus.
