Honors and Awards

Recent awards and honors celebrate Arts & Sciences faculty, staff, and alumni accomplishments in research, community building, and more. 

Dianne Xiao, a University of Washington assistant professor of chemistry, has been awarded a 2022 Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering for her research on creating new materials to make chemical reactions that are compatible with renewable energy sources and raw materials.

The formation of the Pacific Alliance for Low Income Inclusion in Statistics and Data Science (PALiISaDS) is a new partnership supported by a $5,000,000 investment from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics  (SSTEM) Program.  The partnership is led by the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Washington, and also includes the University of California, Irvine, California State University Monterey Bay, California State University East Bay, California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo, and San Diego State University.

Seven professors at the University of Washington are among 25 new members of the Washington State Academy of Sciences for 2022, according to a July 15 announcement.

This spring, the UW and the College of Arts & Sciences celebrated faculty, staff, and students for their many accomplishments.

The Burke Museum at the University of Washington in Seattle today announced it is one of six recipients of the 2022 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. The award is given by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Burke Museum is the only institution in Washington to be selected.

The CAS Dean’s Office conference room will now be named in honor of McElroy, the UW’s first full-time African American female faculty member.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced today that the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture is among 30 finalists for the 2022 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. 

Seattle musicians had a couple of nominations but not many wins at last weekend’s Grammys. One producer who did bring home a Grammy is Steve Rodby, artist in residence in the UW School of Music.

Stephanie Kerschbaum, English professor and director of the Expository Writing Program, has received national recognition for her inclusive mentoring. 

Incoming faculty member Z Yan Wang has been named a Next Generation Leader by the Allen Institute.
